I had crowns made twice because the first ones were really bad. After the second time, they sent me home with a bad pain and a crowns too high, that I couldn’t eat solids for five days. I returned and the pain was constantly still.
I finally went to another dentist and they found many issues with the crowns. I have to pay thousands of dollars for everything!!!
I wouldn’t return ever to the Downey Modern Dentist!!!!

Excellent service. I was treated very kindly and the staff was great. I was having trouble getting a deep cleaning at other places but right here, they offered to help me with managing my insurance so I could have it done today. They were efficient, friendly, and knew how to provide me with the appropriate dentist care. Thank you!

If I could give ZERO stars I would!
I would not recommend this office or dentist and I say that as someone who has never written a negative review before.
Before the cleaning even began, Dr. Joseph Cheung checked my gum pockets by digging a sharp tool into the gum line around every single tooth, even though only half of my mouth had been given anesthesia. I could feel it sharply on the side that wasn’t numbed. Then the cleaning itself was horrible. When he numbed me on the left side during the second cleaning, he hit a nerve that caused such a horrific shooting pain from the top of my head down to my shoulder. The pain was so bad that I began to cry. Instead of being empathetic or apologizing, he stated that this was absolutely normal! There was no warning before tugging and pulling on my mouth and lips as if I were a doll. He has very large hands and did not seem to care how much of them he put in my mouth at once. Excessive pressure was used throughout, to the point where I could feel it even in areas that were already numb. (I do want to commend the assistant during the deep cleaning. She was kind and empathetic and apologized when she saw that what Dr. Cheung was doing was causing me pain. She also provided me with goggles that protected my eyes from all the water and spit. She was very patient and knowledgeable and maintained a kind demeanor even when I was irritated that the front office staff was giving contradictory information).
I should have trusted my instincts after that first visit, but I returned for filling work because I had already paid for all the services that need it to be done.
My last an final visit was for the fillings where Dr. Cheung came into the room and dis not even acknowledge me. No good morning, like any professional would do! Surely you have been taught to greet your patients? He proceeded to tugged so hard on my lips and mouth that it was genuinely painful. He also banged against my teeth with his tools with no regard including in areas that were not numbed. At one point, while repositioning the chair to work from the opposite side, my hair got caught between him and the chair, and he pulled it as he moved. No apology, no acknowledgement. When he was starting the fillings, he asked me to open my mouth as wide as possible. When I did, he seemed truly annoyed and asked, “Is that as big as you can go? Okay,” in a tone that made it clear he was unhappy with how big my mouth could physically open. Without any warning, his assistant then shoved a device into my mouth that forced my jaw to open further. Water and spit were allowed all over my face repeatedly throughout the procedure.
He finished the entire right side of my mouth, and it was only at that point that I told him I did not want him to continue on to the left side.
Once home and when the anesthesia wore off, I was in severe pain on both sides of my face, plus a pounding headache from the jaw-opening device that had been forced on me. When I called the office describing this pain, I was told to come back and see the same dentist who had caused it. I chose not to. Instead, I had a phone visit with my own doctor, who advised alternating ibuprofen and Tylenol, using ice packs, and getting checked to rule out a jaw fracture from the amount of pressure that had been applied. Now I have to go fet an x-ray of my jaw and find a new dentist because now there is pain on my tooth that was not there before I visited Dr. Cheung.
One more thing people should know: the two dentists pictured in this practice’s marketing are the owners, and they do not actually treat patients in this office. The positive reviews praising “the dentist” are not reviews of Dr. Cheung, who is the one who will actually be working on you if you come here.
This was, without question, the worst dental experience I have ever had. I am submitting this same account to the practice owners and to my insurance. There is no yearning in servicing people with kindness and decency. Even if his services would be free (I have a dental PPO), no one deserves to be treated this way.

I had an outstanding experience at The Downey Dentist. The entire team made the visit easy, professional, and surprisingly enjoyable for a dental appointment.
A huge thank you to Maggie, the dental tech who performed my cleaning. She was incredibly thorough, gentle, and very attentive to detail. She made sure I was comfortable the entire time and explained each step of the process. It was easily one of the best cleanings I’ve had.
The front office staff deserves recognition as well. Rayda made scheduling my appointment effortless, and Lily at the front desk was warm, welcoming, and very professional when I arrived.
You can also tell the office runs smoothly because of Sonya, the office manager. Everything from check-in, to the appointment, to checkout was organized and efficient.
The office itself is clean, modern, and extremely well run. If you’re looking for a dental office with excellent care and an outstanding staff, I highly recommend The Downey Dentist.
